Since moving to Portland, the city bus system has been my primary mode of transportation. The Tri-Met bus drivers are a special breed. This morning the driver, who seemed quite normal in every other respect, was flossing his teeth at the stoplights. Last night on the 15, the driver was offering peculiar comedic insights over the PA system.
Of course the passengers can be pretty odd as well. I'm thinking of the giant transvestite who shared my space last night, perfectly coiffed and muttering to herself.
Often when I ride I occupy myself with some silent chanting. The Metta Sutta is best; it speaks so movingly to the tableau of human life sighing and quivering and ranting all around.
